Tram Derails in Milan, Leaving One Dead and Dozens Injured
Milan, Italy – A tram derailed in Milan’s Porta Venezia area Friday afternoon, resulting in at least one fatality and 29 injuries, authorities reported. Several passengers were initially trapped following the accident, which occurred shortly before 4:15 p.m. local time.
The tram, operating on line 9 towards Porta Genova, left the tracks on Via Vittorio Veneto and collided with a shop, according to initial reports. Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, working to extract passengers and provide medical assistance. One individual was reportedly pinned under the tram’s wheels.
“Most of them were passengers who were on board the tram which left the tracks, crossed the carriageway and ended up running into a shop,” reported Il Sole 24 Ore.
The incident has prompted a large-scale emergency response, with ambulances and fire crews converging on the area. While the full extent of the injuries remains unclear, authorities confirm that at least 25 people sustained injuries in the derailment.
