From Renovation Fame to Family Trials: The Life of Mike Holmes Jr.
Toronto, Canada – Mike Holmes Jr., son of renowned contractor Mike Holmes, has become a familiar face to television viewers through HGTV’s “Holmes Family Rescue.” The show, alongside its predecessor series, showcases the Holmes family’s dedication to rescuing homeowners from disastrous renovations and unsafe living conditions. However, behind the on-screen transformations, Holmes Jr.’s life has been marked by a series of personal and professional challenges, a testament to resilience in the face of hardship.
Born in 1989, Holmes Jr. experienced financial instability early in life. The early 1990s brought a significant economic downturn to the Canadian construction industry, devastating his father’s business. Mike Holmes Sr. was forced to lay off employees and sell assets, even his personal vehicle, to stay afloat. This period placed immense strain on the family, ultimately leading to the separation of his parents while he and his sisters were young.
The hardships continued with a series of heartbreaking losses. Shortly after his parents separated, Holmes Jr.’s paternal grandfather died unexpectedly after a fall down a staircase. Just a few years later, in 1993, his maternal grandmother, Shirley Holmes, passed away at the age of 56 due to complications from heart medication. These losses, occurring in quick succession, deeply impacted the family.
As he grew, Holmes Jr. navigated the complexities of a broken home, though his father remained actively involved in his and his sisters’ lives. His sisters, Sherry and Amanda Holmes, would later join him and their father on television projects, solidifying the family’s presence in the home renovation sphere.
More recently, the Holmes family has faced health scares. Sherry Holmes battled a brain tumor, requiring medical treatment and recovery, while Amanda Holmes lives with Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory condition. These challenges have strengthened the family’s bond as they support each other through personal struggles.
In late 2025, the family mourned the loss of Frank Cozzolino, an electrician who frequently appeared alongside them on “Holmes Family Rescue.” Both Mike Holmes Sr. and Jr. shared heartfelt tributes on social media, acknowledging Cozzolino’s significant contribution to their work and lives. Around the same time, the family also experienced the loss of their dog, Caicos, just days before the birth of Holmes Jr.’s son, Aurélien.
Despite these personal tragedies, Holmes Jr. has found joy in building his own family. He and his wife, Lisa Marie Holmes (née Grant), welcomed their daughter, Azura Vie Holmes, in 2023, and their son, Aurélien, in 2025.
The Holmes brand has also encountered professional hurdles. In 2021, a consumer protection organization, Tarion, filed a lawsuit related to the TerraceWood housing project, alleging serious construction defects in homes marketed as “Mike Holmes Approved.” While Mike Holmes clarified that his company provided inspection services and upgrades but wasn’t hired to inspect those specific homes, the case sparked public controversy. The family has also actively worked to combat scammers impersonating them to defraud homeowners.
Through it all, Mike Holmes Jr. continues to work alongside his father and sister, dedicated to improving home safety and helping homeowners avoid renovation disasters. The Holmes family story is a reminder that even those who present a successful image to the public often navigate significant personal struggles, demonstrating the power of resilience and family support.
