“KPop Demon Hunters” Makes History with Oscar Win, Amplifying Korean Representation in Animation

LOS ANGELES – “KPop Demon Hunters” has capped off a remarkable awards season, securing the Oscar for Best Animated Feature on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for Korean representation in the film industry. The Netflix release, a vibrant blend of K-pop and urban fantasy, follows the adventures of fictional bands HUNTR/X and Saja Boys as they battle demons through their music.

The win is particularly historic as co-director and writer Maggie Kang, along with producer Michelle Wong, became the first people of South Korean descent to win in the animated feature category. They accepted the award alongside co-director Chris Appelhans.

“To all the fans who got us here and for all of those who look like me, sorry that it took us so long to see us in a movie like this. But it is here, and that means that the next generations don’t have to go longing,” Kang said during her acceptance speech, emphasizing the importance of visibility. “This is for Korea and for Koreans everywhere.”

Appelhans echoed this sentiment, speaking to the unifying power of music and storytelling. “Tell your story, sing in your voice,” he urged aspiring filmmakers and artists globally, “I promise you the world is waiting.”

The film’s success extends beyond the Oscars. “KPop Demon Hunters” previously earned two Golden Globes – for Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song – and two Critics’ Choice Awards. It also broke ground at the Grammy Awards, securing the first-ever win for a K-pop act.

Released in June 2025, the animated blockbuster, a collaboration between Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix, delivered Netflix its first No. 1 box-office title. The film’s soundtrack topped Billboard’s charts for 2025, with songs like “Golden” and “Your Idol” dominating U.S. Spotify charts.

The story centers on Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, members of HUNTR/X (voiced by Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo respectively), who use their musical talents to protect the human world from demonic forces. The film’s popularity even extended into popular culture, inspiring numerous Halloween costumes. The vocalists behind the characters’ singing voices – including Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami – have also experienced a surge in popularity.
