Japon : Takaichi remporte une victoire écrasante aux élections législatives

Landslide Victory for Japan’s Prime Minister Takaichi Signals Shift to the Right

Tokyo, Japan – February 9, 2026 – Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secured a resounding victory in Sunday’s parliamentary election, winning a two-thirds supermajority in the lower house. The outcome, confirmed by preliminary results reported by Japanese media including NHK, hands Takaichi a powerful mandate to pursue her ambitious and increasingly nationalistic agenda.

The LDP alone captured 316 seats in the 465-member chamber, surpassing the 261 needed for an absolute majority and exceeding the party’s record of 300 seats set in 1986 under Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone. The win comes after just three months in office for Takaichi, Japan’s first female leader, who called the snap election hoping to capitalize on her rising popularity and address recent scandals involving party funding and religious affiliations.

“I am now ready to pursue policies that would make Japan strong and prosperous,” Takaichi declared in a televised address following the results. Images from LDP headquarters showed a visibly elated Takaichi placing red ribbons above the names of winning candidates as party officials applauded.

While the LDP lacks a majority in the upper house, the substantial gains in the more powerful lower house will allow Takaichi to accelerate a right-leaning policy platform focused on bolstering Japan’s economy and military capabilities. This shift comes amid growing regional tensions, particularly with China, and a renewed emphasis on strengthening ties with the United States.

The opposition parties proved unable to mount a significant challenge. A newly formed alliance between the LDP’s former coalition partner, Komeito, and the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan is projected to secure less than half of their combined pre-election seat share. The rise of the far-right Sanseito party, advocating anti-globalist and nationalist policies, also indicated a broader shift in the Japanese political landscape.

Takaichi’s policies are expected to include a significant revision of Japan’s security and defense strategies, potentially lifting the ban on weapons exports and moving away from the country’s post-war pacifist principles. She has also signaled a tougher stance on immigration and national security, measures that have resonated with a segment of the electorate but drawn criticism from civil rights advocates.

The Prime Minister has also pledged to increase defense spending, responding to pressure from the United States, particularly from President Donald Trump, to contribute more to regional security. This commitment aligns with a broader trend of increased military expenditure across the Indo-Pacific region, driven by concerns over China’s growing assertiveness.

The victory has been met with congratulations from international leaders. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to commend Takaichi on her “landmark victory,” emphasizing the importance of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership for global peace and stability.

The election results represent a pivotal moment for Japan, signaling a potential departure from decades of cautious foreign policy and a more assertive role on the international stage. The coming months will be crucial in determining how Takaichi translates her electoral success into concrete policy changes and navigates the complex geopolitical challenges facing Japan.
