Celebrations Erupt in Armenia as Iranians Flee Following Khamenei’s Death

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) – Celebrations have broken out among Iranian expatriates in Armenia following the confirmed death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, on March 1st, according to reports from the region. The assassination, part of a wider joint operation by the United States and Israel, has prompted a surge in Iranians seeking refuge in Armenia, one of the few neighboring countries maintaining an open border policy.

In Yerevan, the capital, Iranians gathered in the streets, including in front of the Iranian embassy, expressing joy and relief. “Yesterday, when we heard the news that Khamenei is dead, at 1 a.m., we went to the street… and started dancing,” said Parham, an Iranian expatriate. Another Iranian, Roya, described the atmosphere as one of profound gratitude, calling out thanks to God and expressing her happiness to family still in Iran.

Many Iranians have sought refuge in Armenia in recent years, drawn by the relative freedoms not permitted in their homeland – freedoms like openly enjoying music and alcoholic beverages. However, a significant number are fleeing persecution, seeking political and religious asylum. Aid organizations are now preparing for an increased influx of refugees as the situation in Iran escalates.

Operation Blessing, a humanitarian organization, is mobilizing to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to those arriving at the border. “We bought some tents. We will go to the border. We will have our tents, we will provide people a hot meal, and also some medicine,” said Samson Mkrtchyan of Operation Blessing. The organization has already been assisting Iranian refugees in Yerevan with essential supplies and even resources to establish small businesses.

The response from the Iranian community has been particularly moving for aid workers, with many expressing surprise and gratitude for the support they’ve received from Christian organizations. “They’re surprised by what is happening. They say, ‘Our Muslim brothers and sisters closed their doors, but Christians opened their doors for us. They help us,’” Mkrtchyan noted.

Local churches are also playing a key role in the relief effort. Dr. Jacob Pursley, a missionary, revealed plans to distribute 147,000 Bibles into Iran from Armenia, viewing the current situation as a pivotal opportunity to share the Gospel.

The Armenian government has expressed condolences to Iran following Khamenei’s passing, acknowledging his role in fostering Armenia-Iran relations, according to a statement released on March 2nd.

The situation remains fluid, but the death of Khamenei has undeniably sparked hope among Iranians both within the country and those who have already sought refuge abroad.
