Iran Intensifies Regional Strikes, Raising Fears of Wider Conflict

TEHRAN – Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has continued a sustained barrage of ballistic missile strikes targeting Israel and US interests across the Middle East, entering what it calls the 28th wave of “Operation True Promise 4.” The escalating conflict, now in its second week, follows the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, an event Iran blames on the United States and Israel.
Footage released by the Revolutionary Guard claims the launches included Kheibar Shekan, Emad, and Ghadr missiles. The attacks have triggered air raid sirens in Israel and Qatar, while US and Israeli forces have responded with strikes on Iranian oil depots, filling the skies over Tehran with smoke.
The conflict is renewing concerns about regional stability and disrupting global energy markets. The US Office of the Director of National Intelligence has previously assessed Iran possesses the largest missile stockpile in the Middle East, a factor contributing to its ability to sustain attacks. Iran’s arsenal includes long-range missiles capable of reaching Israel, such as the Sejil (2,000-km range), Emad (1,700 km), Ghadr (2,000 km), Shahab-3 (1,300 km), Khorramshahr (2,000 km), and Hoveyzeh (1,350 km), according to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
Beyond Israel, Iran has also targeted sites in neighboring countries it alleges are supporting its adversaries. Reports indicate strikes in the UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar since Saturday, with Kuwaiti air defenses intercepting at least three ballistic missiles in the past 24 hours. Saudi Arabia reported at least two deaths, including one Indian national, and 12 injuries due to a projectile.
The situation remains volatile despite recent, seemingly conciliatory remarks from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who initially apologized for attacks on neighboring countries. He has since reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to retaliating against any aggression, even if it originates from within the region.
The ongoing hostilities began with the start of “Operation Epic Fury” by US and Israeli forces, and have triggered unprecedented missile activity in the Gulf skies. The conflict’s trajectory remains uncertain, with the potential for further escalation and broader regional involvement.
