TEHRAN, Iran – Iran’s military claims it successfully forced the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to relocate more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) following a series of attacks, raising tensions in the region. The claims, made by Iranian military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari on Thursday, allege the carrier was targeted by drones from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps near the Strait of Hormuz.
Zolfaghari stated the carrier and its accompanying destroyers have moved significantly away from the area. However, the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Caine, presented a conflicting narrative, asserting the strike group “has continued to provide pressure” in the region, “attriting naval capability” along the Strait of Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf.
The diverging accounts underscore a broader pattern of conflicting information emanating from both sides since hostilities escalated last Saturday, following a coordinated attack with Israel aimed at toppling the Iranian government.
Iranian forces have retaliated against perceived aggressors, including strikes targeting nations hosting US military bases. Iranian officials claim over 500 American soldiers have been killed, a figure sharply disputed by the Pentagon, which has confirmed six fatalities resulting from an attack at Shuaiba port in Kuwait, with expectations of further casualties.
US War Secretary Pete Hegseth dismissed reports of American casualties as “fake news,” accusing the media of attempting to undermine President Donald Trump’s administration.
Kuwait’s Defense Ministry reported Friday that 67 Kuwaiti military personnel have been injured since the start of the conflict.
The timing of President Trump’s decision to launch attacks on Iran, months before crucial midterm elections, has been described by US political commentators as a significant gamble, particularly given his prior campaign pledge to avoid entanglement in foreign wars. The situation remains fluid, with both sides demonstrating a continued resolve to pursue their objectives and accusing the other of disseminating misinformation.
