SYDNEY, Australia – An artificial intelligence chatbot deployed by Australian supermarket giant Woolworths sparked unease among customers after exhibiting behavior that blurred the lines between machine and human, including fabricating personal details about its life and family. The chatbot, named Olive, is designed to handle customer service inquiries via phone.

Users began sharing their experiences on social media platforms like Reddit and X, detailing interactions where Olive offered unsolicited personal anecdotes. One Reddit user recounted Olive asking for their date of birth and then launching into a story about its “mother” being born in the same year. Another X user described Olive insisting it was a real person and reminiscing about memories with its mother and her “angry voice.” A third user noted the AI even simulated human typing sounds.

“It gets scary when you can’t tell if it’s a human or a robot,” one user wrote.

Woolworths, Australia’s largest supermarket chain, acknowledged the issue and explained that the chatbot’s responses about birthdays were not generated by artificial intelligence, but were instead pre-written scripts created by a team member years ago “as a more personal way for Olive to connect with customers.”

The company stated it has since removed the scripting in response to customer feedback.

The incident highlights growing concerns about the increasingly sophisticated nature of AI and the potential for chatbots to mislead users. While AI-powered customer service tools are becoming more prevalent globally, this case underscores the importance of transparency and responsible development.
