Hongrie-Ukraine : Dispute autour de fonds et d’or saisis

Hungary-Ukraine Tensions Escalate After Cash, Gold Seizure

Budapest, Hungary – A dispute over seized funds and gold is further straining relations between Hungary and Ukraine, adding to a complex web of disagreements encompassing energy, financial aid, and military conscription.

Hungarian police earlier this week intercepted two armored vehicles transporting approximately $80 million in US dollars and euros, along with nine kilograms of gold. Seven Ukrainian nationals were detained on suspicion of money laundering and subsequently deported.

Ukraine’s state-owned Oschadbank has demanded the immediate return of the seized assets, claiming they were “illegally seized” and represented legitimate deposits made by Ukrainian citizens and businesses. The bank stated the funds were part of a routine transfer originating from Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has questioned the legitimacy of the transfer, seeking clarification on the origin and purpose of the substantial sum being transported through Hungary. “We just want to know what the Ukrainians are doing with all this money in Hungary,” Orbán said at a recent campaign rally in Debrecen. “All we have right now are questions, but we will find the answers.”

The incident occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions. Kyiv has accused Budapest of deliberately disrupting the flow of Russian oil via a Soviet-era pipeline traversing Ukrainian territory. Ukraine claims the pipeline was damaged in a Russian strike, a claim Hungary disputes.

Further complicating matters, Hungary recently blocked a proposed $105 billion EU loan to Ukraine. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reportedly threatened to share the addresses of Hungarian troops with Ukrainian soldiers, prompting condemnation from both Hungary and the European Union.

The seizure of funds and the broader disputes highlight the increasingly fraught relationship between the two neighboring countries. The situation is being closely monitored by international observers as it adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe.
