Mardi Gras in Sydney: Extensive Road Closures Anticipated for Weekend Festivities
Sydney, Australia – Sydney is bracing for significant traffic disruptions as the annual Mardi Gras celebrations unfold this weekend. Authorities are urging attendees to avoid driving and utilize public transport, with extensive road closures planned across the city from Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning.
The closures, announced by local authorities, are designed to facilitate the parade and ensure the safety of participants and spectators. The most substantial disruptions will center around the parade route, impacting key thoroughfares.
From 4pm Saturday, sections of College Street, Liverpool Street, Wentworth Avenue, Goulburn Street and surrounding local streets will be closed to traffic. Flinders Street northbound lanes, from Moore Park Road to Oxford Street, will follow suit at the same time, remaining closed until 2am Sunday.
Further closures will be implemented later in the evening. Starting at 5:30pm, Anzac Parade northbound, from Cleveland Street to Moore Park Road, and local roads in Surry Hills between Elizabeth Street and Campbell Street, including Nithsdale Street, Foster Street, and Wentworth Avenue, will be affected.
The heart of the Mardi Gras parade route will experience the most extensive closures beginning at 5:30pm and lasting until 2am. Liverpool Street, Oxford Street between College Street and Darlinghurst Road, Flinders Street southbound from Oxford Street to Moore Park Road, sections of Crown Street, and portions of South Dowling Street between Oxford Street and Fitzroy Street will all be impacted. Anzac Parade southbound, from Moore Park Road to Lang Road, including the Eastern Distributor Randwick Anzac Parade off-ramp, will also be closed, though the Bondi exit will remain open.
Finally, Moore Park Road westbound, from Oatley Road to South Dowling Street, will be closed from 6:30pm Saturday until 10am Sunday, with no access to the Eastern Distributor. Driver Avenue between Lang Road and Moore Park Road will also be closed during this period.
These closures are expected to cause significant delays throughout the affected areas. Transport officials recommend checking live traffic updates before travelling and allowing extra time for journeys.
