Iranian Women’s Soccer Players Continue to Leave Australia, Asylum Claims Waning

Sydney, Australia – Five members of the Iranian women’s national football team have now withdrawn their asylum claims and departed Australia, according to Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Matt Thistlethwaite. The departures signal a shifting landscape in the case that drew international attention to the pressures faced by female athletes in Iran.

Thistlethwaite confirmed to Sky News that the additional players left Australia yesterday, leaving only two members of the original seven-person delegation still seeking asylum. He emphasized the government’s respect for the players’ deeply personal decisions.

“Obviously, this is a very complex situation,” Thistlethwaite said. “They’re deeply personal decisions, and the government respects the decisions of those that have chosen to return, and we continue to offer support to the two that are remaining.”

The initial group sought protection in Australia after reports surfaced alleging harassment and threats against them in Iran. The Albanese government had offered support, but the recent departures raise questions about the future of the remaining players’ asylum bids.

News of the players’ situation has prompted calls for greater protection of Iranian women’s football team members while in Australia. Advocacy groups have highlighted the potential risks they face upon returning to Iran, where women’s rights remain severely restricted.

The departures come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, including recent joint US-Israel strikes on Iran, as reported by sources including Facebook news updates. While no direct link has been established, the timing adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

Tasnim News Agency, an Iranian state-run media outlet, released an image of some of the players who chose to return home, reportedly after being granted humanitarian visas.

The Australian government has not commented on whether it anticipates the remaining two players will also ultimately decide to return to Iran. The situation remains fluid, and the government continues to offer support to those who remain.
