HBO Max’s “DTF St. Louis” Subverts Expectations with Darkly Comedic Drama
St. Louis, MO – HBO Max’s new limited series, DTF St. Louis, premiering March 1, is proving to be a surprisingly nuanced exploration of middle-age malaise, infidelity, and the quiet desperation simmering beneath suburban life. Despite a title that initially suggests something altogether different, the series, written and directed by Steven Conrad, delivers a bittersweet and thoughtful viewing experience.
The story centers around the suspicious death of Floyd Smernitch, a sign language interpreter played by David Harbour, and the subsequent investigation led by St. Louis police officers Jodie Plumb (Joy Sunday) and Donoghue Homer (Richard Jenkins). The investigation quickly reveals a complex web of relationships, notably an affair between Floyd’s wife, Carol Love-Smernitch (Linda Cardellini), and Floyd’s friend, local television weatherman Clark Forrest (Jason Bateman).
While the plot unfolds as a suburban noir with elements of black comedy, the series distinguishes itself through its focus on the humanity of its characters. Conrad, known for his previous work including the droll espionage tale Patriot on Amazon Prime Video, imbues the narrative with a patient and empathetic approach.
“Every exchange between the mismatched Plumb and Homer is amusingly deadpan,” notes a review in The Age. The series doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable truths, even incorporating seemingly mundane details – like a recurring discussion of Floyd’s penis curvature – to ground the story in a relatable reality.
DTF St. Louis avoids sensationalism, instead opting for a deliberate portrayal of ordinary people grappling with extraordinary circumstances. The series explores themes of disillusionment, self-loathing, and the search for renewal, all while subverting expectations at every turn. The official trailer, released January 28, 2026, hints at the series’ darkly comedic tone.
