Italian Authorities Investigate Death of Young Boy Following Heart Transplant
Bolzano, Italy – Italian health authorities are investigating the death of four-year-old Domenico Caliendo, who died Saturday following a heart transplant in Naples. The probe centers on potential operational issues during the organ’s procurement and transport, according to reports from the ANSA news agency.
The Trento branch of the NAS Carabinieri, a specialized unit of the Italian military police responsible for health-related investigations, visited the Bolzano hospital Tuesday to gather information related to the case. Investigators have requested a list of all personnel involved in the heart’s removal and transportation. Initial findings, according to ANSA, do not indicate responsibility on the part of the Bolzano medical staff.
The investigation was prompted by a report sent February 18th from the Department of Health Prevention and Health of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano to the Ministry of Health. The report detailed “significant operational criticalities” related to the Naples-based team responsible for retrieving the heart, which was donated by a four-year-old child from Alto Adige.
Specific concerns raised in the report include the surgical procedure followed, incomplete technical equipment – specifically insufficient cooling materials – and uncertainty regarding the management of anticoagulation medication (heparin).
Domenico’s mother, Partizia Mercolino, accompanied by her lawyer Francesco Petruzzi, visited the prosecutor’s office Tuesday to submit an audio recording of a conversation with the cardio-surgeon who performed the transplant on December 23rd. The recording has been turned over to the investigating prosecutor, Giuseppe Tittaferrante, who is leading a case involving seven medical and paramedical personnel under investigation for manslaughter.
The case has drawn significant attention in Italy, highlighting the complexities and risks associated with organ transplantation. According to the Italian National Transplant Center, approximately 600 people die each year in Italy while awaiting an organ transplant. This case underscores the critical need for stringent protocols and oversight throughout the entire organ donation and transplantation process.
