Chappell Roan Faces Backlash After Security Incident at Lollapalooza Brazil
SÃO PAULO, Brazil – Pop singer Chappell Roan is at the center of a growing controversy following accusations that her security team aggressively confronted the 11-year-old daughter of Brazilian soccer star Jorginho Frello at Lollapalooza in São Paulo. The incident has sparked outrage online, with some fans calling for a boycott of the artist and even leading to a ban on her performing in Rio de Janeiro.
Frello detailed the encounter in an Instagram story Saturday, stating that his wife, Catherine Harding (who shares a daughter with actor Jude Law), and their daughter were approached by a security guard while having breakfast at the hotel. According to Frello, the guard accused his daughter of harassing Roan, despite the girl simply walking past the singer’s table, smiling, and returning to her mother. He shared a photo of a handmade sign his daughter had created in anticipation of the concert.
“It’s sad to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans,” Frello wrote, adding, “WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION.”
Roan responded Sunday, claiming she hadn’t even noticed the mother and child and that the security guard was not part of her personal security detail. “I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child. I did not,” she said in an Instagram story. She apologized to the family if they felt uncomfortable, stating, “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children, like that is crazy.”
The incident has escalated beyond social media. Eduardo Cavaliere, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Roan is banned from performing at the city’s Todo Mundo No Rio music festival for as long as he remains in office.
This is not the first time Roan has faced scrutiny regarding interactions with fans and the media. Recent weeks have seen a video circulating of Roan filming paparazzi in Paris, expressing feeling “disregarded as a human” and asking them to stop following her. She has also publicly addressed what she considers “creepy behavior” from fans, emphasizing her right to set boundaries.
