Cape Verde Faces Scrutiny After Multiple British Tourists Die Following Stomach Illnesses
SAL, Cape Verde – A growing number of deaths and illnesses among British tourists in Cape Verde are prompting serious questions about hygiene standards at resorts and raising concerns for travelers. The latest cases, investigated by Irwin Mitchell, include Elena Walsh, 64, of Birmingham, who died in August after falling ill at a resort on the island of Sal. Mark Ashley, from Bedfordshire, succumbed to illness in November despite having his diabetes under control, leaving his widow, Emma, “in complete shock.” Karen Pooley, also 64, died in October after a fall exacerbated by gastric symptoms, with her husband, Andy, describing a desperate search for information during her hospitalization. A 56-year-old man and two other Britons who died since January 2023 also add to the mounting toll.
“We went to Cape Verde expecting a relaxing break, but Mark became violently ill and never recovered,” Emma Ashley told the Press Association.
The incidents have sparked a wave of personal injury claims against tour operator Tui, with families seeking answers and accountability. Jatinder Paul, a serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, described the scale of the outbreaks as “truly staggering.”
“In my experience, I’m used to supporting holidaymakers who have fallen ill at resorts across the globe, but I’ve never seen repeated and continued illness outbreaks at the same resorts on such a scale over such a period of time,” Paul stated.
The firm is urging tour operators to collaborate with Cape Verdean authorities to enforce stringent hygiene and safety protocols. Initial reports indicate that Ms. Pooley’s death certificate cited multiple organ failure, sepsis, cardio-respiratory arrest, and a broken leg.
Tui acknowledged the claims, stating they are conducting a full investigation and providing assistance to affected customers. However, the company noted that some individuals do not report illnesses during their stay, hindering their ability to offer support.
The Cape Verdean government has not yet issued a formal statement addressing the concerns, but the increasing number of cases is likely to put pressure on local health officials to investigate the source of the outbreaks and implement preventative measures.
The popularity of Cape Verde as a tourist destination has surged in recent years, with visitor numbers increasing by 15% in 2023, according to data from the Cape Verde National Institute of Statistics. This growth, while beneficial for the local economy, may be straining infrastructure and potentially compromising hygiene standards.
