Canada grapples with motive after teen shooter’s history of violence revealed

Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia – A community in northern British Columbia is reeling after a school shooting on Tuesday left eight dead, including the 18-year-old shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar. The tragedy has prompted a national conversation about gun control, mental health support, and the warning signs often missed before such devastating events.

Van Rootselaar, who identified as female, opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School after earlier killing her mother, Jennifer Strang, 39, and 11-year-old stepbrother at their home. Five students and a teacher also perished in the school attack, with another 25 injured. Van Rootselaar died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

However, emerging details paint a disturbing picture of a troubled individual with a history of violent behaviour. Neighbours have revealed that Van Rootselaar deliberately set fire to the family home in 2023, allegedly attempting to kill her parents. Melanie, a neighbour who wished to remain anonymous, told the Telegraph she witnessed the teen sitting calmly in the front garden as fire crews battled the blaze. “He was just sitting out in the front when the fire trucks arrived,” she said.

The incident, which nearly destroyed the house, was reportedly “dismissed” by police at the time. Van Rootselaar herself later alluded to the fire in a social media post, attributing it to a hallucinogenic drug experience, writing, “I went crazy and burnt my house down…still have a desire to try alternatives.”

This revelation adds a chilling layer to the investigation, raising questions about whether authorities could have intervened earlier to prevent the tragedy. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire and reviewing their initial response.

“We are committed to understanding the full scope of this tragedy and ensuring that all avenues of investigation are pursued,” said RCMP spokesperson, Sergeant David Thiessen, in a press conference Wednesday. “This includes a thorough examination of the shooter’s background, mental health history, and access to firearms.”

Authorities have recovered four firearms – two from the school and two from the family home, including a shotgun believed to have been used in the initial homicides. The RCMP confirmed that the shotgun had never been previously seized by police, and the primary weapon used in the school shooting, a modified handgun, also has an unknown origin. Canada has stricter gun control laws than the United States, but the incident has reignited calls for further restrictions, particularly regarding access to modified weapons.

The tragedy also highlights the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health concerns. Van Rootselaar’s online presence reveals an interest in firearms and a fascination with “self-reliance,” as evidenced by a YouTube channel shared on her Facebook page. The channel featured content related to hunting and survival skills.

The incident comes as Canada grapples with a rise in violent crime, although mass shootings remain relatively rare. According to Statistics Canada, firearm-related violent crime increased by 29% between 2018 and 2022. The government has responded with measures aimed at curbing gun violence, including a ban on assault-style weapons and increased funding for mental health services.

The community of Tumbler Ridge is now focused on healing and supporting the families affected by the shooting. A local crisis centre has been established to provide counselling and support services.
