Saudi Arabia Warns Iran: Restraint Not Unlimited Amid Escalating Tensions

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister delivered a stark warning to Iran on Friday, asserting that continued attacks on the kingdom and the wider region will not be tolerated indefinitely. Prince Faisal bin Farhan’s remarks followed a meeting in Riyadh of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers convened to address escalating regional tensions stemming from the ongoing conflict that began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28th.

The minister accused Iran of operating under “wrong and dangerous” assumptions about Gulf states’ willingness to accept attacks on their territory. While emphasizing Saudi Arabia and its partners are not parties to the broader conflict, Prince Faisal underscored that they have been directly targeted, including attempts to strike critical infrastructure like Saudi oil fields. He confirmed those initial attacks were successfully intercepted.

“Our restraint is not without limits,” Prince Faisal stated during a press conference, signaling a potential shift in Saudi Arabia’s approach. He dismissed Iranian justifications for targeting neighboring countries – specifically claims linking such actions to the U.S. presence in the region – as “not convincing,” noting Gulf states had made clear they would not allow their territories to be used for attacks against Iran.

The situation is further complicated by disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global energy supplies. These disruptions have contributed to rising oil and gas prices, raising concerns about global economic stability. Prince Faisal described any obstruction of navigation through the strait as “unjustifiable” and a form of political pressure impacting both energy and food security worldwide.

Saudi Arabia indicated it will pursue measures to safeguard freedom of navigation, including the possibility of seeking international intervention.

The foreign minister concluded by stating that trust with Iran has been severely damaged and will require significant time to rebuild, contingent on a cessation of attacks. The New York Times reported on the growing frustration within Saudi Arabia, with Prince Faisal warning patience is limited. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/19/world/middleeast/iran-missiles-saudi-arabia-riyadh-yanbu.html

The situation remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation. According to a Wikipedia entry documenting the 2026 Iranian strikes on Saudi Arabia, attacks have been ongoing since the initial conflict began. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Iranian_strikes_on_Saudi_Arabia
