Antonelli triomphe à Shanghai : première victoire italienne en F1 depuis 2006

Antonelli Makes History, Revitalizes Italian Formula 1 Hopes with Shanghai Victory

SHANGHAI – Andrea Kimi Antonelli etched his name into Formula 1 history on Sunday, becoming the second-youngest race winner ever with a dominant performance at the Shanghai International Circuit. The 18-year-old Italian driver, piloting a Mercedes, secured victory in just his second Grand Prix, reigniting passion for the sport in Italy, which hadn’t celebrated a win since Giancarlo Fisichella’s triumph in Malaysia in 2006.

Antonelli’s win comes after qualifying on pole position, making him the youngest driver to ever achieve that feat. While initially challenged by the Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at the start, he quickly regained the lead and controlled the race, finishing ahead of teammate George Russell.

“I’m very happy, I wanted to bring Italy back to the top,” an emotional Antonelli said after the race, fighting back tears. “I almost had a heart attack at the end with that lock-up, but it was a good race.”

The victory is a testament to Antonelli’s skill and the bold gamble taken by Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, who promoted the young driver directly to F1. The performance also underscores the early-season dominance of Mercedes’ machinery.

Lewis Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, finished third, marking his first podium appearance with the team. The race featured a spirited battle between Hamilton and teammate Leclerc, with the seven-time world champion ultimately prevailing.

“It was incredible – we were wheel to wheel, we even touched a little bit,” Hamilton said, describing the duel with Leclerc as one of the most exciting races of his career. He extended congratulations to Antonelli, noting he wasn’t even one year old when Hamilton secured his first Grand Prix win.

While Ferrari showed pace, Leclerc acknowledged Mercedes’ advantage. “Lewis was stronger from the first practice session, he deserved the podium,” Leclerc conceded. “We need to work because they are ahead.”

The race wasn’t without its drama. McLaren suffered a double retirement due to mechanical and electrical issues, while reigning champion Max Verstappen was forced to withdraw late in the race after a fluctuating performance. Both Aston Martin cars also retired. Oliver Bearman, driving for Haas, secured a fifth-place finish, but trailed Antonelli by nearly a minute.

The Formula 1 World Championship continues in two weeks with the Japanese Grand Prix. However, the upcoming races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have been cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

This victory for Antonelli signals a potential shift in the Formula 1 landscape and offers a renewed sense of optimism for Italian motorsports fans.
