China Amplifies Criticism of U.S. as Iran Conflict Escalates

BEIJING – As the conflict between the U.S. and Iran continues, China is allowing a surge of online criticism targeting President Donald Trump and U.S. policy, according to reports from CNN. The unusual move, characterized by the dissemination of videos and memes across Chinese social media, appears to be a deliberate effort to capitalize on the ongoing tensions.

The online campaign includes animated videos depicting American eagles ridiculing a U.S.-hosted security summit, with one scene showing an eagle in a suit suggesting “a little control” is necessary for security. Other content portrays Trump as “evil” and “dishonest,” imagery typically suppressed by China’s strict censorship apparatus.

CNN’s Will Ripley, reporting from Taiwan, noted the escalation of “trolling” alongside the escalating conflict. He highlighted the viral spread of videos mocking a recent prayer circle held by President Trump with religious leaders.

The shift in online messaging comes as China postponed a planned visit by President Trump to Beijing, originally scheduled for March 31 to April 2. The trip would have marked Trump’s first visit to China during his second term and was intended to address the ongoing trade war between the two nations. In late October 2025, Trump had expressed optimism about resolving the trade war during a potential meeting with President Xi Jinping.

The allowance of anti-U.S. content is being interpreted as Beijing “seizing on the moment” to condemn the U.S. involvement in the conflict with Iran, which began in late February. While the Chinese government has not officially commented on the surge in online criticism, the decision to loosen censorship suggests a calculated strategy to leverage the situation for political gain.
