Heba Touji Closes Baalbek festival wiht Stunning “Revives” Performance
Last Friday, Lebanese actress Heba Tuji brought teh summer season of the Baalbek International Festivals to a close with an extraordinary concert titled “Revives.” Prepared and overseen by musician Osama Rahbani, the performance evoked the legacy of ancient civilizations in a modern spirit, blending music, light, imagery, and movement.
“Revives” wasn’t simply a concert, but a meticulously crafted musical theater piece designed to tell the story of the temple over thousands of years. The concept originated with oussama Rahbani 15 years ago and was realized this year through a fusion of live performance with three-dimensional projections that reshaped the temple to reflect its past stages – from its initial Roman construction, through the Byzantine and Ottoman eras, to contemporary Baalbek.
Tuji appeared in a white gown inspired by Roman civilization, designed by Nicolas Gibran and embroidered with gold thread. She began by delivering powerful words about resilience and hope, opening the program with “I Am My Name Baalbek” (lyrics by Ghadi Rahbani, music by Osama Rahani). Surrounded by dancers, Tuji presented striking musical variations, transitioning from “Ave Maria” to classic Lebanese songs, and even a rock-orchestral piece titled “The New system.”
A segment dedicated to romantic songs showcased her clear voice, featuring tracks like “The First Thing She Saw” and “no Beginning and No End.” Another section evoked nostalgia for the past, with songs like “Time of Show was the Sweetest Time of Times,” accompanied by black and white scenes reminiscent of ancient photographs.
Tuji concluded the evening with “The Balad Al -Tafara,” prompting the audience to stand, wave Lebanese flags, and interact with the performance as the lights and music reached a powerful crescendo.
