Trump Hints at Potential Shift in Cuba Policy Following Focus on Iran
WASHINGTON (AP) — During a reception honoring the 2025 MLS champions Inter Miami, U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested a potential re-evaluation of U.S. policy toward Cuba, signaling the island nation could be a future focus for his administration after addressing the situation in Iran.
“We want to fix, finish this one first — but that will be just a question of time before you and a lot of unbelievable people are going to be going back to Cuba,” Trump said, according to reports. He was addressing U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Miami-born son of Cuban immigrants, praising Rubio’s work on Cuba.
The remarks come as Washington maintains an energy blockade against Cuba, severely impacting its fuel supplies. The blockade followed the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a key oil supplier to the communist-ruled island. Since January 9, Cuba has not imported oil, leading to flight cancellations and exacerbating the country’s existing economic challenges, according to Agence France-Presse.
Trump’s comments have sparked concern in Cuba that the nation could be next in line for U.S. intervention, particularly following recent attacks on Iran that resulted in the death of its supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. Both Trump and Rubio have previously voiced support for a change in leadership in Havana.
The potential shift in policy comes at a critical juncture for Cuba, already grappling with a severe economic crisis. The energy blockade has had a tangible impact, disrupting essential services and further straining the island’s resources. The situation underscores the interconnectedness of regional politics and the potential for escalating tensions.
While Trump emphasized prioritizing the situation in Iran, his indication that Cuba would be addressed “just a question of time” signals a possible willingness to revisit long-standing policies toward the island nation. The implications of such a shift remain to be seen, but the remarks have already generated significant attention and speculation.
