‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Sees Lineup Shakeup, Nadiya Bychkova Among Professionals Departing
LONDON – Several professional dancers have been removed from the lineup of the popular BBC One show “Strictly Come Dancing” ahead of the 2026 series, including Ukrainian dancer Nadiya Bychkova, sources confirmed Tuesday. The changes come as producers aim for a “fresh start” following recent scandals and the departure of longtime hosts Tess Daley and Claudia Winkleman.
Bychkova, a multiple-time Slovenian Ballroom and Latin Champion and two-time World and European Champion in ‘10’ Dance, joined “Strictly” in 2017. While initial speculation suggested age may have been a factor in the decision, insiders say the reasons are more complex.
According to sources, concerns over Bychkova’s conduct off the dance floor played a significant role. Reports indicate backstage outbursts created tension with colleagues. Her recent breakup with fellow professional dancer Kai Widdrington also contributed to an uncomfortable atmosphere, a situation show management reportedly prefers to avoid.
“Strictly is a light entertainment show, but it has to be competitive,” one source said. “Execs want the pros to treat the series like a sport and get the best results out of their partners.”
Further complicating matters was Bychkova’s close friendship with former “Strictly” contestant Dan Walker, a married father of three. BBC executives reportedly worried the relationship drew unwanted attention to the show. The friendship continued even after their 2021 pairing, with Walker attending events to support Bychkova and offering assistance with social media, raising eyebrows among show officials.
Bychkova’s performance on the show in recent years also factored into the decision. Despite being paired with athletes Tom Dean and Chris Robshaw in 2025 and 2024 respectively, she experienced early exits, finishing 13th and 15th.
Alongside Bychkova, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk, and Michelle Tsiakas have also been removed from the professional lineup. While the departures of Bychkova, Marquez, and Mushtuk, all in their mid-thirties, initially sparked discussion about ageism, sources within the show maintain that older dancers are valued for their established fan base and experience.
The shakeup signals a significant shift for “Strictly Come Dancing,” a cornerstone of British television. The show’s producers are hoping to avoid a repeat of past controversies and maintain high standards of competition as they move forward with a revamped team.
