‘Survivor’ Contestant Raquel Arias Details Lasting Physical, Emotional Toll of Reality Show
Honduras – Three years after appearing on the Spanish reality television show Supervivientes (Survivor), Raquel Arias is speaking out about the profound and lasting impact the experience had on her physical and mental health. As the latest season of the show premieres, Arias is sharing her story, describing a journey that pushed her to her limits and left her grappling with the aftermath for over a year.
Arias described the experience as both “the hardest thing” she’s ever endured and “one of the best adventures of her life,” according to an interview with Semana magazine. The show’s extreme conditions, particularly the severe food deprivation, proved to be a significant challenge.
“I had never gone so hungry,” Arias said. “As a foodie, it was hard to manage mentally. But thanks to that experience, I discovered the capacity of the mind to withstand extreme situations, and I apply that in my daily life.”
The physical toll was substantial. Arias revealed she gained 13 kilograms (approximately 29 pounds) after leaving the show, driven by intense cravings. She even resorted to carrying food with her and waking in the night to eat, battling a constant “mental conflict.”
Beyond the weight gain, Arias experienced a year-long disruption of her menstrual cycle and hormonal imbalances requiring medical intervention. She continues to struggle with digestive issues triggered by certain foods.
“I’ll never forget my first night in Honduras, surrounded by bugs, huge cockroaches, sleeping in the sand not knowing what would happen the next day,” she recalled. The constant hunger led her to desperate measures, admitting she even consumed toothpaste when she thought no one was watching.
Arias also touched on the negative impact of online criticism, acknowledging the cruelty she faced on social media while struggling with her weight gain. However, she ultimately focused on regaining her health and well-being, eventually regaining her regular menstrual cycle in February 2024.
Arias’s experience highlights the often-overlooked psychological and physiological consequences of participating in extreme reality television. While Supervivientes offers adventure and exposure, it’s clear the show can leave a lasting mark on its contestants.
