Pakistan Launches Retaliatory Strikes Against Taliban Targets in Afghanistan
Kabul, Afghanistan – Pakistan’s military launched a series of cross-border strikes late Thursday under the banner of “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq” – meaning “Righteous Fury” – in response to alleged unprovoked attacks by the Afghan Taliban. The escalating conflict raises concerns about regional stability and follows a period of heightened tensions along the disputed Durand Line border.
Pakistani officials claim the operation targeted key military installations and defense positions within Afghanistan, specifically in Kabul, Paktia, and Kandahar provinces. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that at least 133 Taliban operatives were killed and over 200 injured during the strikes. He further detailed the destruction of 27 Taliban posts, with nine others reportedly captured, alongside significant losses in military hardware including tanks, artillery, and armored vehicles. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif described the action as a strong response to “aggression” from the Afghan Taliban.
The Pakistani government asserts these strikes were a direct response to attacks on Pakistani border posts.
Afghanistan’s Ministry of National Defence offered a contrasting account, claiming 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed in retaliatory operations along the Durand Line. The ministry accused Pakistani forces of violating Afghan territory and causing civilian casualties, stating the operation began at 8:00 pm local time on February 26th. Afghan forces reportedly targeted Pakistani military posts in several provinces bordering Pakistan, including Paktika, Paktia, Khost, Nangarhar, Kunar, and Nuristan. They claim to have destroyed two Pakistani military bases and 19 posts, while also capturing military equipment.
The 2,611-kilometer Durand Line, the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, has long been a source of contention, with Afghanistan never officially recognizing it.
The recent escalation marks a significant shift in the relationship between Pakistan and the Taliban-led Afghanistan. While Pakistan previously played a role in facilitating talks between the Taliban and international actors, relations have soured in recent months amid accusations of the Taliban providing safe haven to militant groups operating against Pakistan.
The situation is being closely monitored by regional and international observers, with India reportedly keeping a close watch on developments. The potential for further escalation and the humanitarian implications of the conflict remain significant concerns.
