Rwenzori Marathon Opens to Global Runners, Boosting Uganda Tourism
Kasese, Uganda – The Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon is removing registration restrictions, opening its doors to runners worldwide and aiming to significantly boost tourism to Uganda, organizers announced Friday. Previously limited by country-based registration, the marathon now welcomes athletes from all nations, a move hailed as a major upgrade for the race’s growth.
“Full online registration has been opened and there is no limitation anymore by country,” said Amos Wekesa, event team leader.
The change comes alongside an overhaul of the payment system, now accepting international cards like Visa and Mastercard, digital wallets including Apple Pay and Google Pay, and a range of regional mobile money and banking options. East African runners can utilize Airtel Money, MTN Mobile Money, and M-Pesa, while West African participants have access to e-Naira, Paga, and MTN. European runners can pay via SEPA direct debit, and those in South Africa can use EFT and prepaid vouchers.
The Rwenzori Marathon, held annually in Kasese, Uganda, is known for its stunning scenery, crossing the equator and winding through the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Runners can choose between a full marathon (42.2km), a half marathon (21.1km), and a 5km fun run.
Early-bird registration, available until July 1, 2026, is priced at UGX 50,000 for East African residents and USD 50 for international athletes. Fees will increase after that date.
Organizers anticipate a surge in foreign athletes, bringing increased revenue to Kasese’s hospitality sector and the wider Ugandan tourism economy. The event also serves as a gateway to other Ugandan attractions, such as Queen Elizabeth National Park and opportunities for primate trekking.
The marathon also holds significance for competitive runners, serving as a qualifier for both the Comrades Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon.
The 2026 race is scheduled for August 22nd. Organizers believe the broadened accessibility transforms the Rwenzori Marathon from a national event into a truly global competition.
