Middle East Tensions Prompt UK Travel Advice Updates for 76 Territories
LONDON – As regional instability escalates in the Middle East, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for 76 countries and territories, warning British nationals to avoid certain areas due to security risks, health concerns, and legal differences. The updates, issued over the weekend and continuing on Monday, reflect growing anxieties following recent strikes by the US and Israel, and reported explosions in several regional capitals.
The FCDO currently advises against all travel to Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Mali, Niger, Palestine, Russia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
For a further 22 countries, the advice is to avoid all but essential travel. These include Bahrain, Cuba, North Korea, Kuwait, Qatar, and Ukraine, as well as parts of Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Moldova, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, and Turkey.
Approximately 300,000 British citizens are believed to be in countries potentially affected by the escalating conflict, with over 102,000 registered with the Foreign Office. The government is reportedly developing contingency plans, including potential large-scale evacuations, according to statements from officials.
“The UK Government will help keep Brits abroad safe,” stated Keir Starmer, though his FCDO team has issued the extensive list of countries with heightened risk.
The situation dramatically deteriorated over the weekend, prompting the FCDO to issue updates for 20 countries. Explosions were reported in Jerusalem, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Manama.
Travel insurance validity and consular assistance availability may be limited for those who choose to travel against FCDO guidance. Airlines globally have suspended flights throughout the Middle East following what have been described as “major combat operations.”
The FCDO urges anyone planning travel to the Middle East to closely monitor the latest travel advice and adhere to instructions from local authorities.
