UAE Minister Warns Strait of Hormuz Disruptions Threaten Energy Security

TOKYO – The United Arab Emirates’ Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Sultan Al Jaber, emphasized the critical importance of maintaining stability in the Strait of Hormuz for global energy security during a visit to Japan, according to reports Wednesday.

“While your energy security continues to be our priority, we will not be able to do much if there is any distortion in the Strait of Hormuz,” Al Jaber stated during meetings with Japanese officials.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments. Approximately 30 percent of the world’s seaborne crude oil transits the strait, making it a focal point for international concern.

Al Jaber’s remarks came during a trip to meet with Japanese Trade Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura and other officials, focusing on energy cooperation and regional security. Discussions included the safe navigation of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and the safety of Japanese nationals in the region, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed.

The UAE minister’s warning underscores growing anxieties about potential disruptions to energy supplies amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Recent reports have highlighted the potential for conflict in the region, raising fears of attacks on shipping lanes and infrastructure. [1]

The visit by Al Jaber, also head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), signals the UAE’s commitment to working with key partners like Japan to ensure a stable energy supply. [3]
