Robert Mueller, FBI Chief and Russia Probe Leader, Dies at 81

WASHINGTON – Robert S. Mueller III, who led the Federal Bureau of Investigation through a pivotal period following the September 11, 2001, attacks and later investigated alleged ties between Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia, has died at the age of 81. His death occurred on Saturday, according to reports.

Mueller served as FBI director from 2001 to 2013, transforming the agency to prioritize counterterrorism efforts in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. He later became special counsel, overseeing a two-year investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and potential coordination between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

The investigation, launched in 2017, deeply impacted U.S. foreign policy and domestic politics, resulting in sanctions against Russia. While Mueller’s team did not establish a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, the report detailed numerous contacts between individuals associated with the campaign and Russian-linked actors.

The findings were based on a 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) alleging collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. Both Trump and Russian officials consistently denied any such ties.

News of Mueller’s death drew a swift and controversial reaction from former President Donald Trump, who openly celebrated the occasion on his Truth Social platform. Trump stated he was “glad” Mueller was dead, claiming he “can no longer hurt innocent people.”

Trump has long characterized the investigation as a politically motivated “witch hunt” and an “attempted coup” aimed at derailing his presidency. Upon regaining office last January, he has actively sought retribution against those involved in the probe. A White House investigation into the origins of the “Russiagate” allegations was launched last year, with subpoenas issued to multiple former top officials. The probe is currently led by US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who has described the affair as a “treasonous conspiracy.”

The Mueller investigation led to several indictments and convictions, but also faced criticism for its scope and cost. The full report, released in 2019, remains a subject of debate and scrutiny.
