An undisclosed Eastern European army has contracted British radar manufacturer Blighter to supply advanced ground surveillance technology, aiming to strengthen its border monitoring capabilities. The deal, announced March 9, involves the delivery of B400 series radars and the BlighterNexus AI-assisted software platform.
The systems are designed to detect and track individuals, vehicles, and low-flying aerial threats at ranges up to 32 kilometers, operating effectively around the clock regardless of weather conditions. Deployment will include both fixed installations along the border and mobile units mounted on reconnaissance vehicles, creating a layered surveillance network.
“Following a record order book in 2025, we are delighted to secure another border surveillance contract in Europe adding to our recent successes in the Middle East and Asia Pacific,” said James Long, Blighter’s chief executive officer, in a company statement.
Unlike traditional observation methods, radar technology offers a significant advantage by penetrating darkness and adverse weather, providing continuous monitoring. The B400 series radars also feature low power output and a low probability of intercept, reducing the risk of detection by potential adversaries.
The BlighterNexus software integrates radar data into existing command-and-control systems, allowing commanders to view a unified operational picture. This integration moves beyond isolated sensor readings, enabling a more comprehensive and coordinated approach to border security.
Ground surveillance radar systems are increasingly vital for nations facing evolving security challenges. According to a 2023 report by the International Crisis Group, border security is a growing concern for many Eastern European nations due to regional instability and increased migration flows. This contract reflects a broader trend of investment in advanced surveillance technologies to address these concerns.
Blighter anticipates imminent deployment and integration of the systems into the army’s existing infrastructure. The company plans to continue pursuing new business opportunities both domestically and internationally through its expanding sales force and strategic partnerships.
