Putin’s ‘Hidden Hand’ Suspected in Iran’s Escalating Conflict with US, Israel

LONDON – As tensions escalate in the Middle East, with Iran facing increased pressure from the United States and Israel, mounting evidence suggests Russia is playing a key role in bolstering Tehran’s military capabilities and tactics. UK Defence Secretary John Healey has stated that there are “hallmarks” of Russian operational methods in recent Iranian attacks, particularly in the use of drones.
The assessment comes amid a wider conflict that has seen oil prices surge, a development that directly benefits the Kremlin’s revenue streams. According to Politico, the increased oil prices are making it easier for Russian President Vladimir Putin to fund his government.
Healey specifically pointed to Iranian forces targeting a base in Iraq, where British troops are stationed, as exhibiting tactics similar to those Russia has employed in Ukraine. “No one will be surprised to believe that Putin’s hidden hand is behind some of the Iranian tactics, potentially some of their capabilities as well,” Healey told reporters.
This support isn’t new. Russia and Iran have a longstanding relationship, including arms deals and weaponry purchases. Tehran supplied Russia with “Shahed” attack drones in the early stages of the war in Ukraine, which Moscow then adapted for its own use. Now, reports indicate Russia is reciprocating by assisting Iran as it faces bombardment from the US and Israel.
Lieutenant General Nick Perry, the chief of joint operations overseeing UK military operations, confirmed a link between the two countries. “We have definitely seen the Iranian tactics of the use of their drones learnt from Russians – flying them much lower so they are more effective,” Perry said. “There is no doubt [the Iranian] tactics have changed.”
The conflict has already seen repercussions beyond the immediate region. An Iranian-linked drone recently struck the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, an incident Healey described as a “dangerous and indiscriminate attack.” Parts of the drone are currently being investigated for potential Russian components.
While the US has reported casualties, Healey confirmed there have been no British casualties to date. Putin, Healey added, “is clearly likely to welcome this war more than anyone else.”
The situation remains fluid, but the growing evidence of Russian involvement raises concerns about the potential for further escalation and the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict.
