Woman Leaps to Safety From Burning Los Angeles Building
LOS ANGELES (AP) – A dramatic rescue unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Los Angeles after a woman jumped from the second story of a burning fourplex in the Historic South Central neighborhood. Firefighters quickly rescued the woman after she landed on a rooftop structure attached to the building and transported her to a local hospital. Her condition has not been released.
The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. on the 200 block of West 43rd Street, prompting a large response from the Los Angeles Fire Department. According to the LAFD, crews battled the blaze using both internal firefighting efforts and roof ventilation techniques.
Dramatic images from the scene show the woman clinging to a ledge as thick, black smoke billowed around her.
More than 60 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the fire, which was successfully contained in 39 minutes. In addition to the woman who jumped, two other women, aged 47 and 61, were hospitalized in fair condition. Their current status remains unknown.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by arson investigators with the LAFD.
This incident highlights the ongoing risk of residential fires in densely populated urban areas. According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 368,000 residential building fires in 2022, resulting in thousands of injuries and fatalities.
The Los Angeles Fire Department urges residents to ensure they have working smoke detectors and a fire escape plan.
