Middle East Engulfed in Escalating Conflict as Iran Selects New Supreme Leader

The Middle East is embroiled in a widening conflict, with Israel launching “extensive waves of attacks” against targets in Iran, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The escalation follows a joint U.S.-Israeli operation that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and has triggered retaliatory strikes and heightened tensions across the region.
The IDF announced its latest attacks targeted launch sites, air defense systems, and additional infrastructure within Iran. Simultaneously, a strong explosion rocked Beirut, Lebanon, shortly after midnight, as exchanges of rocket fire and attacks continued between Israel and Hezbollah.
Hezbollah, backed by Tehran, resumed its attacks with rockets and drones against Israel on Monday, in response to Khamenei’s death. The situation took a dramatic turn late Tuesday with the announcement that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader, has been selected as the new Supreme Leader by the Iranian Assembly of Experts, following a directive from the Revolutionary Guard. The news was initially reported by Iran International and subsequently confirmed by Israeli media outlet Haaretz.
The selection of the younger Khamenei came amidst reports of Israeli strikes targeting key Iranian institutions. The IDF reportedly attacked the “most important” headquarters of the ayatollahs in Tehran, and later targeted the Assembly of Experts in Qom, the body responsible for choosing the new Supreme Leader. Conflicting reports emerged regarding whether the building had been evacuated before the strike, with Iranian media claiming it was empty, while Israeli sources suggested the vote was underway at the time of the attack.
The United States has warned its citizens to “immediately” depart 15 countries in the Middle East, signaling a growing concern for the safety of American citizens amid the escalating conflict. Two Iranian drones reportedly struck the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia, causing a limited fire, and a similar incident occurred at the U.S. consulate in Dubai.
Israel has also begun advancing into southern Lebanon for the first time since the November 2024 ceasefire, aiming to establish a “security buffer” between Hezbollah militants and Israeli communities. This move has already led to the displacement of at least 30,000 people in Lebanon, according to the United Nations.
European nations are also responding to the crisis. British jets have intercepted drones in the skies over Jordan and Iraq, and the United Kingdom is deploying military assets, including the Dragon warship and anti-drone helicopters, to protect the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, which was recently targeted by Iranian drones. France is also sending additional air and naval reinforcements, including the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier.
Tehran has warned that any “defensive action” by European countries will be considered “an act of war.” The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has also threatened reprisals, warning that attacks on regional economic centers could drive oil prices to $200 a barrel.
Israel, which has reported 12 injuries from recent Iranian attacks, continues to target Hezbollah in Beirut. The current situation represents a dangerous escalation of tensions in a region already grappling with instability.
