Escalating Tensions in Middle East Disrupt Global Air Travel, Drive Up Fares

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The conflict involving Iran is causing significant disruption to global air travel, particularly for flights between Asia and Europe, with fares skyrocketing ahead of the Easter holiday period. More than 46,000 flights have been cancelled since the conflict began on February 28, according to aviation data firm Cirium.

The crisis has wiped out as much as 10% of global airline capacity, marking the largest shock to the aviation industry since the COVID-19 pandemic. A substantial portion of air traffic between Asia and Europe – roughly a third, or about 40 million passengers annually – typically transits through the Gulf region, making it particularly vulnerable to disruptions.

Recent analysis of Google Flights data shows a dramatic increase in ticket prices. An economy class round-trip ticket between Sydney and London for travel between April 3 and 10 has risen by more than 80% in the past two weeks. Business class fares on the same route are approximately 40% higher.

The disruptions stem from airspace closures and military restrictions across the Middle East following recent strikes and retaliatory actions. Major Gulf hubs, including Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, have been forced to suspend or significantly reduce operations for several days. Airlines are responding with cancellations and rerouting, adding to the chaos for travelers.
