FAFSA Deadline Approaching: Illinois Families urged to Apply Early

VIENNA,Ill. – Families in Illinois and the surrounding region have until June 30th to submit their Free Submission for Federal Student aid (FAFSA) for the 2025-2026 academic year. While that may seem like plenty of time, a local high school counselor is encouraging families to complete the form as soon as possible.

With many schools already on summer break, now is an ideal time for parents and students to work together on the application.

Recent changes to the FAFSA, implemented for the 2024-2025 year, have simplified the process by reducing the number of questions and adjusting how aid eligibility is persistent. This year’s FAFSA remains the same.

Vienna High School is one of only six schools in Illinois where 100% of the senior class completed the FAFSA, a requirement for graduation in the state.

Rhiannon Slife, a guidance counselor at Vienna High School, emphasizes the importance of carefully completing the application. She notes that many people mistakenly believe they’ve finished the FAFSA once they create their Federal Student Aid ID. “That’s just a way to open up an account,” Slife explains. “Both the parent and student need to complete the actual FAFSA application after the government verifies their identity.”
