EgyptAir Addresses Reports of Price Gouging on Gulf-Cairo Routes

CAIRO, Egypt (March 7, 2026) – EgyptAir is pushing back against social media claims of dramatically increased ticket prices for flights from Gulf countries to Cairo, attributing perceived hikes to limited availability and rising operational costs linked to regional geopolitical tensions. The airline confirmed it is prioritizing the return of Egyptian citizens whose flights were previously cancelled, but stressed that new bookings are severely restricted.

The national carrier implemented an operational plan to accommodate passengers affected by recent flight suspensions – stemming from operational adjustments following events in the region – offering daily exceptional flights. However, EgyptAir noted that these flights operate under constraints imposed by civil aviation authorities and current conditions.

“The vast majority of available seats are dedicated to passengers with existing, confirmed bookings,” a company statement explained. EgyptAir has also waived change penalties to ease the burden on travellers.

While acknowledging that some seats may be available for new purchases, the airline stated these represent a maximum of 5% of total capacity and are priced in line with market rates charged by other airlines operating similar routes.

A significant factor driving current pricing, according to EgyptAir, is a surge in insurance costs due to increased risks associated with flying through areas of heightened geopolitical instability. The airline is also absorbing the costs of outbound flights operating with empty seats.

“EgyptAir remains committed to its role as the national airline, supporting Egyptian citizens both at home and abroad during this challenging period,” the statement concluded.

The situation highlights the impact of broader regional instability on air travel and the challenges airlines face in balancing passenger needs with operational realities. The airline’s response comes as concerns grow over the accessibility of travel options for Egyptians working in Gulf states seeking to return home.
