Drone Strike Hits RAF Base in Cyprus Amidst Escalating Middle East Tensions

Akrotiri, Cyprus – A one-way attack drone struck the Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri in Cyprus late Monday, according to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). The incident occurred amidst a surge in conflict in the Middle East that began over the weekend.

No casualties were reported, but the MoD announced it is temporarily relocating non-essential staff and their families to alternative accommodations on the island as a precautionary measure.

“The safety of our personnel and their families is our absolute priority,” an MoD spokesperson stated. “Our base and personnel continue to operate as normal protecting the safety of Britain and our interests.”

The origin of the drone remains unconfirmed. The strike damaged the runway, prompting precautionary measures around the base, according to UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

This marks the first attack on the RAF facility since a rocket attack by Libyan militants in 1986.

The incident comes hours after Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed the UK had permitted the United States to launch strikes against Iranian missile sites from British bases, including RAF Akrotiri, as well as RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands.

The Liberal Democrats have warned this decision could draw Britain into a “prolonged war” in the Middle East.

Cyprus’s President Nikos Christodoulides affirmed that the island nation is on full alert but reiterated its non-participation in any military operations. A government spokesperson stated the drone caused “limited damage.”

The escalating tensions in the Middle East follow recent strikes and counter-strikes involving Iran and Israel. More than 200,000 British nationals, including military personnel, are believed to be at risk in the Gulf region as the situation unfolds.

The UK armed forces had already been bolstering defenses at its Cyprus base with additional resources, including counter-drone systems, F-35 jets, and radar systems, prior to the attack. The MoD emphasized these were purely defensive measures.
