Water Security in the Gulf: A Growing Vulnerability Amid Iran Tensions
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – In the arid Gulf region, where rainfall is scarce and temperatures soar, access to fresh water is a matter of survival. But as tensions with Iran escalate, the region’s reliance on desalination plants is emerging as a critical strategic weakness, potentially eclipsing the importance of oil and gas infrastructure.
The six member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) – Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman – overwhelmingly depend on converting seawater into potable water to meet their needs. Nearly 450 desalination facilities operate across the Persian Gulf, a testament to the region’s dependence on this technology.
However, Iran’s growing capabilities to strike these facilities – through missiles, drones, swarms of small boats, or cyberattacks – pose an existential threat to the GCC nations. While Iran has its own desalination operations, it also draws water from rivers, reservoirs, and aquifers, offering a degree of resilience the Gulf states lack.
“The GCC states could face rapid societal collapse without their desalination plants,” warns a recent analysis of the situation.
Saudi Arabia, a key US ally and the world’s largest producer of desalinated water, is particularly vulnerable. Experts estimate that the country could function for only seven to fourteen days on existing supplies if its main plant in Riyadh were destroyed.
The GCC is coordinating responses to this emerging threat, according to reports, but finding effective solutions remains a significant challenge. The situation highlights a growing need to balance diplomatic efforts with robust deterrence strategies, as Gulf states seek to navigate a precarious security landscape.
