Talks Between US and Iran to be Hosted in Oman Amid Rising Tensions
Geneva, Switzerland – Oman will host talks next week between the United States and Iran, Switzerland announced Saturday, as Washington seeks to rein in Tehran’s nuclear program amid escalating regional tensions. The discussions, facilitated by Swiss “good offices,” represent a delicate diplomatic effort to avert further conflict.
The move comes after an initial round of indirect talks earlier this month in Muscat, where US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Oman acted as a mediator during those discussions, a role it has frequently played in past US-Iran negotiations.
The timing of these renewed talks is particularly fraught. President Trump has recently adopted increasingly hawkish rhetoric towards Iran, focusing specifically on its nuclear ambitions. Last July, US forces engaged in strikes related to Iran’s nuclear program during a 12-day conflict involving Israel and Iran – a period of intense regional instability.
“A change of government in Iran would be the best thing that could happen,” Trump stated Friday, simultaneously announcing the deployment of a second US aircraft carrier to the Middle East. The USS Gerald R. Ford, pictured in a recent satellite image released by Planet Labs PBC via Reuters, joins the USS Abraham Lincoln in the region, significantly increasing the US military presence.

The deployment underscores the escalating pressure on Iran, which has been accused of destabilizing activities in the region. According to a recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran continues to exceed limits set under the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). While Iran maintains its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, concerns remain about its potential to develop nuclear weapons.
The JCPOA, which Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from in 2018, aimed to limit Iran’s enrichment of uranium in exchange for sanctions relief. The current impasse has led to a gradual erosion of the agreement, with Iran resuming some enrichment activities and the US reimposing sanctions.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry emphasized its commitment to facilitating dialogue. “Switzerland stands ready at all times to offer its good offices to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran,” a spokesperson said. Switzerland has a long-standing tradition of neutrality and has historically served as a protecting power for US interests in Iran, a role it continues to fulfill.
The stakes are high. A failure to reach a diplomatic resolution could lead to further escalation, potentially drawing in other regional actors and destabilizing an already volatile region. The talks in Oman represent a crucial opportunity to de-escalate tensions and explore potential pathways towards a more stable future. The international community is watching closely, hoping for a breakthrough that can prevent a further deterioration of the security situation in the Middle East.
