To help you plan your trip, here are some must-see destinations to add to your North Dakota itinerary:
1. Theodore Roosevelt National Park & Medora: Where the Wild West lives on
Kim Schmidt, Communications Manager for the North Dakota Department of Commerce, calls this a “top attraction.” Unlike some of the more crowded national parks, theodore Roosevelt National Park offers a sense of solitude amidst stunning canyons and roaming bison herds. It’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The charming town of Medora serves as the park’s gateway and is worth a visit,especially with the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opening in 2026.
2. Lake Sakakawea: A Water Lover’s Paradise
No trip to North Dakota is complete without experiencing Lake Sakakawea. This massive lake in the northwest attracts anglers, boaters, and anyone who loves being on the water. Boasting more shoreline than California’s Pacific coast, it provides ample access for a day of aquatic fun. If you prefer staying on land, explore the scenic hiking trails along the shore at Lake Sakakawea State Park and Fort Stevenson State Park.

6. North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum: A Journey Through Time
This free museum is a must-see for visitors of all ages, tracing North Dakota’s history from 600 million years ago to the present day.”It’s marvelous for kids,” Schmidt notes. “Along with four galleries, they have a treehouse there, so if you have young children, it’s a great place to get them immersed in learning and also activities.”
