Green Party Leader Condemns US Strikes on Iran, Accuses Trump of ‘Law of the Jungle’ Approach
LONDON – Green Party leader Zack Polanski has launched a scathing critique of former U.S. President Donald Trump following American and Israeli strikes on Iran that reportedly resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader. Polanski accused Trump of operating under a “law of the jungle” and warned that the UK risks being “dragged into another illegal war.”
Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg program, Polanski sharply criticized the strikes as “illegal and unprovoked.” He further condemned the lack of explicit condemnation from current political leaders, particularly Sir Keir Starmer, for the initial actions by the U.S. and Israel, while criticizing Iran’s retaliatory missile launches across the Middle East targeting civilian infrastructure.
“It’s quite astounding that we have a Prime Minister that seems singularly incapable of standing up to Donald Trump and letting the UK stand on its own two feet,” Polanski stated. He called for a “disentanglement” of the UK’s decades-long military cooperation with the United States.
Polanski, who describes himself as an “eco-populist,” expressed concern over the erosion of international law, asserting that “there is no historical precedent where bombing has successfully led to democracy.” He acknowledged not having an “easy answer” to achieving peace in the region but emphasized that airstrikes are not a viable path to positive change.
The Green Party leader’s comments came after his party’s victory in Thursday’s Gorton and Denton by-election.
The criticism has not been without pushback. Labour MP David Taylor labelled Polanski a “charlatan” for claiming to represent the interests of the Iranian people.
Trump has defended the strikes, stating they were aimed at eliminating “imminent threats” from the Iranian regime and halting its nuclear ambitions, adding that Tehran had “rejected every opportunity to renounce their nuclear ambitions.”
Polanski countered this argument, stating it was “absolutely outrageous” that the U.S. and Israel’s actions weren’t condemned before Iran’s response. He urged Starmer to publicly denounce the strikes and called for de-escalation.
The situation remains volatile as Iran continues to respond to the strikes, raising fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East. Polanski stressed that the UK’s national security is being worsened by increasing tensions in the region and that prioritizing de-escalation and adherence to international law is paramount.
