WASHINGTON – Claims by U.S. President Donald Trump of “very good and productive conversations” with Iran have been met with derision from Tehran, as tensions persist over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials have openly mocked Trump’s assertions, denying any negotiations are underway.
The back-and-forth comes amid a volatile situation in the Persian Gulf, where U.S. intelligence officials report Iran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies. The placement of at least a dozen mines has raised concerns about potential disruptions to maritime traffic.
Trump had initially suggested a joint control arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz, stating he would share responsibility with “the Ayatollah, whoever the Ayatollah is.” This proposal was quickly ridiculed by the Iranian embassy in South Africa, which posted a meme on social media depicting a child’s steering wheel alongside a real ship’s wheel, with the caption: “The Strait of Hormuz will be controlled by me and the Ayatollah.”
Further mocking the President, the embassy shared a fabricated WhatsApp chat appearing to show Trump in conversation with himself about postponing strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure.
The exchange follows Trump’s weekend announcement that he would postpone threatened strikes on Iran’s power stations, hinting at a potential deal to de-escalate the crisis. However, Tehran has officially denied any negotiations are taking place.
Trump initially issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a demand met with a threat from the Iranian regime to target financial institutions and infrastructure in the Middle East.
