Trump Ousts Homeland Security Secretary Noem Amidst Growing Controversy

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump has fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the White House confirmed Thursday, bringing an end to a tenure marked by escalating internal conflict and public criticism. The dismissal comes after Noem revealed under oath that Trump had allegedly approved a $220 million taxpayer-funded advertising campaign featuring herself, fueling speculation about potential future political ambitions.

Trump, in a brief statement, expressed surprise at the campaign details, stating, “I never knew anything about it.” However, sources within the administration indicate the firing was the culmination of months of mounting concerns over Noem’s leadership and increasingly polarizing approach to immigration enforcement.

The situation reached a critical point following Noem’s controversial response to the fatal shooting of activist Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis in January. While federal officials typically defer judgment pending investigation, Noem immediately characterized Good’s actions as “domestic terrorism,” claiming she had “weaponized” her car and attempted to harm law enforcement.

This pronouncement drew sharp criticism from within the law enforcement community, with one former senior DHS official telling the Daily Mail it demonstrated “profound ignorance” and a “disturbing disregard for the proper way to investigate an officer-involved shooting.” Calls for Noem’s impeachment quickly followed from Democratic lawmakers.

Beyond the immediate fallout from the shooting, Noem’s tenure was plagued by internal strife. Reports indicate a significant power struggle with Tom Homan, Trump’s hand-picked border czar, over immigration policy. While Noem favored highly visible, large-scale deportation operations, Homan reportedly prioritized the removal of the most dangerous criminal aliens.

This divergence in approach, coupled with Noem’s attempts to publicly position herself as the face of Trump’s immigration agenda, reportedly alarmed Republican strategists who feared it was turning immigration – previously a key strength for the president – into an electoral liability ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Further complicating matters were concerns about the influence of Corey Lewandowski, Noem’s trusted advisor and, according to reports, romantic partner. Sources within the Department of Homeland Security described Lewandowski as abrasive and alleged he attempted to leverage his position to obtain a federally approved firearm.

Noem’s past also drew scrutiny, including the revelation in her book that she had killed her family dog. While seemingly unrelated to her official duties, the incident contributed to a narrative of questionable judgment.

The dismissal of Noem marks the latest in a series of personnel changes within the Trump administration, highlighting the president’s willingness to remove those he perceives as disloyal or detrimental to his political goals. The White House has not yet announced a replacement for Noem, but Oklahoma Senator James Mullin has been mentioned as a potential nominee.
