Trump Administration Weighs Military Options as Iran Nuclear Talks Continue

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is considering military options in response to Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities, even as negotiations continue in an attempt to de-escalate tensions. The potential for conflict looms as talks between U.S. and Iranian officials, most recently held Thursday in Geneva, appear to be reaching a critical juncture.

Trump, in his State of the Union address earlier this week, reiterated his commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. “I will never allow the world’s No. 1 sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon. Can’t let that happen,” he stated.

The administration’s frustration centers on Iran’s refusal to discuss its ballistic missile program alongside negotiations regarding its nuclear ambitions. U.S. officials have described this as a “big, big problem,” signaling a potential impasse.

While the president has expressed a preference for a diplomatic resolution, the possibility of military strikes remains on the table. Potential targets could include Iran’s ballistic missile program, nuclear facilities, or leadership figures, according to sources familiar with the discussions. A more extensive campaign aimed at destabilizing or overthrowing the current regime is also being considered.

“If I were advising the president and he were determined to follow through on the use of force, I would advocate for a more limited strike and communicate to the regime that this is just a limited strike to try to induce them to engage in token retaliation and hope that the conflict can de-escalate,” said Matthew Kroenig, a former Pentagon official specializing in Iranian affairs.

The U.S. currently maintains a significant military presence in the Middle East, the largest since the lead-up to the Iraq War. This deployment underscores the seriousness with which the administration views the situation.

The current situation builds on decades of strained relations between the U.S. and Iran, dating back to the 1979 revolution. Prior administrations have also grappled with Iran’s nuclear program. The Obama administration faced criticism for the 2015 nuclear deal, which some considered too lenient and economically empowering to Iran. The George W. Bush administration labeled Iran part of an “axis of evil” as its nuclear program accelerated.

Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to meet today with Oman’s foreign minister, who has been acting as a mediator in the ongoing talks.

The stakes are high, with observers suggesting the current negotiations may represent a final opportunity to avert military conflict. The outcome will have significant implications for regional stability and global security.
