Despite being a breakfast staple, cereals are not as good for our health according to a survey conducted by French magazine 60 Million Consumers. The magazine recommends replacing cereals with a healthy and affordable muesli to start the day in a better way, revealing the best muesli from the supermarket.

It is often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However, the reality is that many breakfast foods are high in sugar and fat, and low in protein. They are not filling enough to keep us satisfied until lunchtime. Fruit juices full of sugar, high-calorie pastries, overly-sweetened industrial bread, low-quality semi-industrial bread, and sugary cereals—while the World Health Organization recommends limiting our sugar intake to 50 grams per day, these pre-packaged products exceed our daily sugar intake. One of the worst in this category, the survey found, was cereals, as most cereal products have a very high glycemic load (taking into account both the glycemic index and carbohydrate content).

This is why the magazine 60 Million Consumers analyzed 12 cereals and 12 mueslis in search of a healthy breakfast option. The results show that muesli ranks first on the list and is the best option for a healthy breakfast.

Cereals and Mueslis: The Verdict of 60 Million Consumers

All cereals have high glycemic loads (averaging 30). They cause a spike in blood sugar that leads to sugar being stored as fat and can cause diabetes. Moreover, an average serving of cereal provides 16g of sugar, which is one third of the recommended daily intake of sugar alone. The survey’s conclusion is clear: it is better to eat muesli in the morning as mueslis have a lower glycemic load (less than 20) as well as being rich in fiber, which promotes digestive health, regulates blood sugar and cholesterol, and helps prevent some cancers. However, not all mueslis are the same, and all the analyzed references are too sugary except for two options: the Bjorg oat flakes and the Fruit Muesli from Gerblé, which was named the best muesli by the magazine. It is sold for only 3.29 euros at Carrefour and is a healthy alternative to morning cereals.

What’s in the Best Muesli for Your Morning?

Rated 18/20 by 60 Million Consumers with an A Nutri-score, Gerblé’s Fruit Muesli has a lower glycemic load than Bjorg’s oat flakes and contains even more fiber. It is not too sweet or salty, has no added sugars, and is made of oat, barley, and wheat flakes mixed with dried fruits (raisins, apples, hazelnuts, dates, bananas, and almonds). With no additives or preservatives, it is ideal to start the day with energy and avoid mid-morning cravings, while also avoiding excessive sugar consumption in the morning.
